Make a Free, or Low Cost Website

Create a free website to earn an income

It's true. You can make a free website - and I mean, you can do it entirely without any cash outlay. (You will need a computer and an internet connection).

Your first web site can be created for free, and hosted for free.  It's even easier with your second.

In current times, many people are drawn to the idea of creating a free website to boost their income. It is entirely possible to do this. Easy Website Primer takes a special interest in sourcing free services and tools to help you accomplish this goal. And all our tutorials are free.

Whenever a tutorial deals with tools and services, we provide a selection of free and paid-for products so that you can choose according to your needs.

You can create a website and host it on Blogger.com or Wordpress, to name just two completely free services. There are many others.

My best advice? If you can afford to, go for your own domain name (registration cost is around US $10 per year), and top quality paid hosting ($4 - $8 per month). This gives you ownership of your domain, more control and fewer restrictions, robust service and better quality support. But if you don't wish to spend anything, then go the free route!

So let's look at what personal resources you need to create a winning website:

Time

If you haven't already, take a good look at the previous page (Website Build Summary.) As you can see, there is plenty of work to do in creating a website

Even if you use the best tools around, developing a website takes time, especially if this is your first. (I estimate the second one takes about half the time, for the same sized site)

So how long will it take? Anything from a few weeks  to a few months, depending on how big and complex your site will be. That's assuming you can work on it for several hours a day.

Many people just don't have that kind of time to spare. If that's your case, you may prefer to sub-contract some or all of the work. We discuss using professional help a little later on in this course. But, the more involved you are in their work, and the more knowledgeable you are about the process they will undertake for you, the more successful your project will be.

Talent

I'd like to be able to tell you that anyone can develop a website. The truth is, you need to be pretty computer literate. And you need to be able to express yourself clearly in writing.

Apart from these two areas, there is no special talent required. (If you are challenged in either of these two areas, then you may want to hire some professional help.)

It helps, too, if you are good at graphic design. Many sites demonstrate amazing design talent. Personally, I'm somewhat challenged here (as you can tell!) But depending on your topic and your intended audience, you may be able to get away without much design flair.

Treasure

Here the news is all good because you can create a great website without spending any money (unless you cost in your time!)

There are many products designed to make your work easier or more efficient. You do have to pay for some of the more comprehensive ones. Others are completely free. I was amazed at just how much good software is available as freeware. If you want to make a free website, the tools are certainly available.

So even if you are very constrained financially, it need not be an obstacle. It may encourage you to do a great job, so that your site can generate an income ("treasure" is stretching it somewhat!).

But if you don't need to keep the costs to absolute zero, I'd recommend shelling out those few dollars to register your own domain, and for a  good web hosting service. More on those in later tutorials.

And if you don't mind spending some cash on useful tools, the work becomes easier, and you'll probably save some time.

What kind of person creates their own website?

If you want to build your own site, you need to have a lot of patience and a high tolerance for frustration. Your friends will probably think you are slightly crazy. Consider that they may be right! But making a website isn't a crazy idea.

Now we're ready to move on to the Preparation section. The first tutorial is about deciding the topic for your site...
