Sell downloadable ebooks, esoftware, egoods
The ideal business?
Think about this: No manufacturing costs, no stock, no physical storage space, no packaging costs, no shipping, no staff, almost no capital. Sounds like a business made in heaven: Sell ebooks!
Ebooks, esoftware and other egoods (audio files, video files, mp3 etc) all offer these benefits. And ebooks (electronic books) are never out of stock, and never, ever out of print.
Selling egoods from your website is one of the easier ways of making money online, so they say. Let's take a look.
Ebook source - Write your own
Writing your own ebook is a great way of ensuring that your material is original. It costs you nothing except your time.
Ebooks can be almost any length, usually from 20 to 150 pages. Most ebooks would be in the bottom half of this range.
Give some thought to whether your purpose would best be served by a written book, or an audio or video presentation. If written, you will probably want to create it as a PDF document to discourage tampering. Other proprietary formats are available too.
The topic should match or complement your website topic. Indeed, your site will probably be created with the express purpose of selling your ebook, so it should be very specifically targeted to bring in potential buyers.
There are many articles, ebooks, and some useful software to help you achieve a professional result - and keep your property safe.

Ebooks - Instant gratification
Remember the main reasons why people buy ebooks:
- They can't find the information they need anywhere else
- They expect to pay less money for a downloadable ebook than for a hard copy book
- They desperately need information. With an ebook they know they will get it fast.
The last reason is an especially important factor in the success of many ebooks. The more urgently people need information the more readily they will overcome their reluctance to buy online.
ebooks and esoftware - Legal rights
There are many existing online ebooks and esoftware products which may be sold to you on the understanding that you may then resell them.. This is known as buying the resale rights.
If you have purchased master resale rights, then whoever buys from you can also resell the product.
Whenever you buy resale rights or master resale rights, you will enter into an agreement with the seller, which will define what you may and may not do with the egoods. For example, a master resale agreement may stipulate that you will not sell the specified ebook below a particular price.
While you are buying resale rights to an ebook, others may be doing the same, (unless the seller grants you exclusive rights). So when you sell the ebook, you may find many alternative sources competing with you. This may affect the price you can ask for it.
So even if you have master resale rights, you are not in the same position you would be, had you written the ebook yourself.
There are many sources of resale rights for existing ebooks and esoftware products. Some are listed in our Links / Resources. A Google search for ebook resale rights, or even free ebook resale rights will bring up many result pages.
Sell ebooks from your site
You will probably want to have a web page dedicated to the sale of your ebooks or other egoods.
On that page you will have a full description of the ebook and the information it contains.
It's a good idea to include reviews from people who have read your ebook on your web page. (Most people will be pleased to be asked to write a review for publication.) You can also post reviews on free book-review sites.
Ebook payment and download
The buyer selects the item/s she wants and places them in her "shopping cart." (You will have built the shopping-cart software into your web page).
When a purchaser clicks on your Pay-for-Purchases button she will be taken to a secure page (https:) which will allow her to enter her account / credit card details safely.
Having paid, she will usually be given access to a link which she will click on to initiate the download of her ebooks or esoftware.
Within a few minutes of clicking on the order button, she should have taken delivery.
Behind the scenes, as it were, your web page has been quite busy, with the help of its shopping-cart software and payment gateway/s. We'll take a look at this process in our next tutorial, Web Sales...
