Everyone talks about finding a profitable niche and building a site around it. But where do you look ?

Harvey Segal has the perfect answer, he's used it to create 3 profitable niche sites which he shows you in his free ebook The Ultimate SuperTip

Website topics - What makes a good one?

Did your website topic choose itself?

Many people have a pretty good idea of what they want their website topic to be. They have a desire to share or promote a particular topic, and that is why they want a website. Their choice of website topic seems so natural to them that its hardly worth thinking about.

But whether your intended site is a basic commercial site to promote a business, or a shared-interest site to explore a hobby or interest,  how you define your website topic will be crucial to its success.

Sometimes a small change in website topic perspective can result in a large change in effectiveness. Lets start by looking more closely at the basic company website...

Company website topics

You know the kind of site I mean. The one that has information about the company, its location, staff, product range, usually not much else.

This is actually one of the most common types of website around. We tend not to realize that because we don't generally visit many sites like this. Unless we know about the business already, how would we know to visit the site? And why would we want to?

The company sees its website purely as an extension of its business card and usually promotes the site to customers and suppliers on its letterhead, business cards and advertising. Outsiders never hear about the site.

In this case, the website topic is the company.

A shift of website topic

But a commercial website can do much more for you than that, if you want it to. It can attract business, bring in new customers and potential suppliers - who would not have found the business otherwise.

Instead of the business having to promote its website, the website now promotes the business!

To do that, without expensive advertising, the website must provide useful content, relevant to your customers' interests. Those interests now become the centre of focus for your site. You define your website topic around them.

Then when people search for that information, they find it on your site (which ranks high in the search engine results) and so they also find your company. Happiness.

If you choose your website subject and content carefully, you can attract visitors who are at the last stage of their product research. You give them all the information they need to make up their minds. Then they look around your site for the order button!

A well-chosen website topic, together with good, relevant content, can attract new customers and suppliers to your business. It can bring in additional product orders from new and existing customers, and gain greater prestige for your company.

The Shared-Interest Site

Perhaps you want to create a website to share information about some topic that you are passionate about, let's say cooking. How should you define your website topic?

You have to carefully select a website topic that will make your site different from millions of others out there. It has to be different, so people will find it when they search for it.

As an example, today I asked Google Search about "cooking" and it listed the first ten of 161 million sites. You could be in the top 1% of that pile at 1,61 million, and still not get a visitor to your website in 100 years!

(In April 2009 there were over 232 million websites, according to the authoritative stats produced by Netcraft. It's easy to get lost out there!)

So what's the answer? You have to specialize. Our next tutorial deals with how to set boundaries to your website topic, to create a niche for your site.
